Dresden Stollen Festival
Stollen Maiden
Since the 2nd Dresden Stollen Festival in 1995, a "face" has been attributed to the Dresden Stollen and the festival - that of the Dresden Stollen Maiden (Dresdner Stollenmädchen). Having been created only marginally - so to say as a friendly gesture - the figure of the Stollen Maiden has become Dresden’s most frequently photographed person during the time of Advent, and a popular advertising medium of the city far beyond the boundaries of Saxony. PR-expert Holger Zastrow, whose agency has organized the Stollen Festival from the beginning, is the inventor of the Dresden Stollen Maiden.
Every year in October, a jury led by the head of the agency Holger Zastrow elects a new Stollen Maiden. All of the candidates are baker or pastry-chef trainees of the Vocational School for Nutrition in Dresden. The jury has stipulated several critera for selection, for example: good school performance, knowledge about the Dresden stollen and the festival and love of the city Dresden. Of course, PR aspects play a decisive role as well.
Traditionally, a newly elected Stollen Maiden assumes her important honorary post in the beginning of November, after the Reformation holiday. For a period of twelve months, the Stollen Maiden’s primary role is to fulfil prestigious tasks in connection with the preparation of the Dresden Stollen Festival, the representation of Dresden`s baker and pastry-chef trade and the marketing of the stollen. In this function, she travels across Germany, visits closely related towns, Christmas fairs and other events, and appears on TV and radio shows promoting the German "Christmas capital" Dresden.
